Alyshia Tkacs was arrested on June 17 after the alleged victim reported her in April. According to the Daily Mail, officers from the East Providence Police Department discovered evidence that the victim met Tkacs in 2012 while coaching a competitive cheering squad. The attack is said to have persisted until 2014. “The victim indicated that the sexual attacks happened practically every day in East Providence and Barrington, RI during a two-year period,” said Lt Michael Rapoza.
After the charges were made public, the accused, who worked as a nurse at Woman & Infants Hospital, was suspended without pay. Care New England, who owns the hospital, issued a statement through their spokesperson, Raina Smith, saying, “Care New England completed background checks prior to hiring, and those were clean.” She has been suspended indefinitely without pay and is not permitted to enter our campus. We take the care and safety of our community extremely seriously, thus we acted right away when we were alerted.”
CheerFactor All-Stars, where the suspect’s little daughter reportedly cheers, also issued a statement through owner Christie Blushi. It added, “Please be aware that Alyshia Tkacs has never coached, instructed, or worked for CheerFactor or any of its related gyms or programmes. Her daughter is a participant, and it is her only connection to the programme as the mom of an all-star cheerleader.”
Chronology of the events
Veronica Seavey, who attended nursing school with Tkacs, told NBC she is shocked by the claims. “It just didn’t seem like something she’d do, especially because she had a kid that age,” Seavey explained. “She was my nurse at Women & Infants when I had my kid three and a half months ago.”
The Barrington Police Department has initiated its own investigation into the accusations. The former coach has not yet filed a plea, and there is no counsel allowed to speak on her behalf, according to public records. According to police, Tkacs is being detained without bail at the Cranston Women’s Facility and is expected in court on June 23.
