Outcome of Roe v. Wade Case, Reaction of Public, And Consequences
The 1973 abortion ruling was overturned today by the United States Supreme Court, which had six of its nine judges vote in favor. Roe v. Wade is one of the most famous US court rulings ever since it invalidated numerous federal and state abortion regulations. However, the ruling has been in jeopardy for a number of years, and as of right now, it has been reversed by the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. All sides of the pro-choice movement have expressed outrage over the decision in the hours after it was made, and groups like Planned Parenthood have vowed to support the provision of abortion care.
Identity of Jane Roe, Controversies, and Importance in Roe v. Wade Case
According to PBS News Hour, Norma McCorvey, a native of Texas, was the one who first raised the issue of Jane Roe. Since Jane Roe was a variation of “Jane Doe,” a name given to women in US law enforcement cases whose identities were to be protected, McCorvey was given it solely for the case.
At the age of 21, McCorvey became pregnant with her third child in 1969. She lived in Dallas, Texas, and wanted to get an abortion, but at the time, Texas law prohibited them unless a woman was in a life-threatening situation.
McCorvey, who was represented by attorneys Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, filed a lawsuit in federal court against the district attorney in the area, claiming that Texas’s abortion laws went against the constitution rights.
The Roe v. Wade case, which Jane Roe’s side won in 1973, significantly changed the availability of abortions to women across the country. McCorvey was born in 1922, and on February 18, 2017, she passed away. Despite being so influential in the pro-choice movement, McCorvey was known for having controversial and shifting opinions on abortion.
Identity of Wade and Importance in Roe v. Wade Case
From 1951 through 1987, Henry Wade served as the district attorney for Texas. He defended Texas in the Roe v. Wade lawsuit, arguing that abortions should only be performed in dire life-or-death situations.
Wade had a really impressive career. In addition to the well-known Roe v. Wade case, he took part in the trial of Jack Ruby, who was convicted of killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged JFK gunman.
Wade’s career did not suffer as a result of the abortion choice, and he went on to continue working for several years after what was thought to be a catastrophic blow for pro-life campaigners. Wade passed away from Parkinson’s disease on March 1st, 2001.
