Bowling Them Over in 2023

In Super Bowl LVI, the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, bringing an NFL championship to the City of Angels for the first time in nearly 40 years. So who will win the Super Bowl 2023 in the coming calendar year? Which teams are a good bet on being Super Bowl champions? Who will bowl over the competition and lift the coveted Lombardi trophy? Read on to find out my predictions.

Before last season, the Cincinnati Bengals were tied for the third-longest odds to win Super Bowl 56 at 150-1. Those who took that bet nearly made a fortune after the Bengals made an unlikely run to the Super Bowl but fell just three points short of the Los Angeles Rams. Los Angeles entered 2021 with the same Super Bowl odds as it does this year, 12-1.

This season, the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks both have 150-1 odds to win the 2023 Super Bowl, but are either of these long shots a realistic contender to repeat what the Bengals did last season? Let’s look at some of the runners and riders for this season and their chances of success.

New Orleans Saints

Last season, the Saints would have made the playoffs if Jameis Winston (5-2 as a starter) hadn’t torn his ACL in Week 8. The Saints finished 9-8 despite starting four different quarterbacks throughout the season. As long as GM Mickey Loomis can find a suitable starter, New Orleans should be back in the playoffs. Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas lead a talented group of playmakers, and the defense ranks among the top ten in the league. Competent quarterback play will be enough to get New Orleans into the playoffs.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo made two significant moves during free agency, signing Jamison Crowder and Von Miller. They mostly added defensive players in the NFL draft. Nonetheless, they added a pass-catching back in James Cook and some wide receiver depth in Khalil Shakir, a Day 3 pick. This offense is as complete as they come. They have an elite quarterback in Josh Allen, a talented receiving group led by Stefon Diggs, and a solid offensive line. I’d be surprised if Buffalo didn’t remain Super Bowl favorites up until the beginning of the 2023 season.

Indianapolis Colts

Matt Ryan, the latest in the line of Colts starting quarterbacks, is sure to be a welcome sight for Indy third-year studs Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. Despite inconsistency at quarterback, Taylor led the league with 332 carries, 1,811 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 106.5 yards per game last season. He finished second in the voting for 2021 Offensive Player of the Year and will be eager to break records now that he has a former MVP under center.

Pittman is coming off a 1,000-yard receiving season and should be able to outdo that by a few hundred yards if he stays healthy. The talent makes Indianapolis a strong underdog pick to represent the AFC.

Kansas City Chiefs

Because of their offseason additions, teams like the Chargers and Broncos could easily win the AFC West, but I’m going to give the edge to the Chiefs because they still have the best head coach-quarterback pairing in the division. However, I don’t think they’ll be able to repeat as the No. 1 seed because they lost some quality players such as Hill and Mathieu in the offseason and have the fifth-hardest strength of schedule, in addition to playing in a now-stacked division.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have not won a league championship since 2009 and have finished third in the WAC the last two seasons. This year, quarterback Justin Herbert enters his third season, and other stars on both sides of the ball, like Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Derwin James, return with their sights set on a deep playoff run.

Los Angeles Rams

The only thing more difficult than winning a championship is defending it. That is precisely the situation the Rams are in after winning the Lombardi Trophy last season. The Rams’ front office has done everything possible to avoid any complacency or Super Bowl hangover this season. Most of the key players from that roster are back, but they lost some key starters. They lost Robert Woods and Odell Beckham Jr to free agency at receiver. They were replaced by signing Allen Robinson from the Bears, who had 102 receptions for 1,250 yards just two seasons prior. They also lost long-time LT Andrew Whitworth, who has started 235 NFL games, to retirement.
