The revocation of the honorary three-year membership of Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues by Khar Gymkhana, one of Mumbai’s most prominent clubs, has put her in the centre of controversy.
In recent weeks, Jemimah Rodrigues’ situation has gotten worse. The top-order batswoman is involved in a dispute that has little to do with her on-field exploits following a disastrous Women’s T20 World Cup in which the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian squad was unable to advance past the group stage and Jemimah’s personal fortunes suffered.
Club members reached the decision on October 20 in response to charges that Ivan Rodrigues who is the father of Jemimah Rodrigues had violated the gymkhana’s constitution by holding religious gatherings on the club’s property.

According to committee member Shiv Malhotra, Ivan Rodrigues, Jemimah’s father conducted around 35 meetings for Brother Manuel Ministries in a venue reserved under the name of Jemimah Rodrigues, highlighting the fact that such actions are forbidden. Rule 4A of the club’s constitution states that religious activities are strictly prohibited.
“We hear about conversions all over the country, but it’s happening right under our nose. There was dancing, expensive music equipment, big screens. As per Khar Gymkhana’s bye-laws Rule 4A of the constitution, Khar Gymkhana does not permit any religious activity,” Malhotra said.
Vivek Devnani, the president of Khar Gymkhana, condemned rivals for engaging in communal politics before to the club’s elections and refuted claims that Jemimah’s father used the club hall for religious conversions.
Although Jemimah’s membership was revoked, Devnani told media that “no evidence” had been provided to back up allegations of religious activities occurring in the club.
Later this month, Khar Gymkhana will hold elections for its trustees and managing committee. There are political motivations behind these accusations. No proof of any claimed misconduct has been shown.

Her father’s name is Ivan Rodrigues who is a preacher, pastor and cricket coach and her mother’s name is Lavita Rodrigues.
