What is the Just Stop Oil climate activist group, founder, donors, donations and why do they target sports events
Why Just Stop Oil group is interrupting major sporting events?
On Wednesday, protestors raced onto Court 18 twice and managed to delay play by scattering confetti and jigsaw pieces around the grass, making Wimbledon the most recent event to be affected. Notably, this protest came after demonstrators made comparable appearances at the World Snooker Championship, the rugby premiership championship, & last week’s Ashes Test at Lord’s.
During the second Ashes Test in Lord’s, three Just Stop Oil protesters entered the playing area and from the boundary, they moved towards the crease. Following this, they sprinkled orange powder across the ground to halt play until security personnel removed the protesters. An image of England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow taking one of the protesters off the pitch by himself went popular on social media.
The Climate Emergency Fund is part-funded by Aileen Getty, a US philanthropist whose grandfather was petroleum tycoon J Paul Getty. roger Hallam, the 56-year-old from Wales, who lives in south London, is the leader of Just Stop Oil.
It was started with a $500,000 donation from Aileen Getty, granddaughter of Jean Paul Getty, founder of the Getty Oil Company.
What is the objective of Just Stop Oil group?
It is known that the environmental activist group Just Stop Oil wants the UK government to halt the licensing of new fossil-fuel projects. The organization made its debut on the sporting scene with a string of high-profile demonstrations during Premier League football games, including one during Everton vs. Newcastle United in which a group member cable-tied himself to a goalpost during play.
Moreover, the group is well-known for often disrupting oil factories and blocking some of the busiest roads and motorways in the UK. Additionally, some of the members have damaged office block exteriors and art installations. It is commonly acknowledged that one of the main causes of the global climate catastrophe is the exploitation of fossil fuels like coal, oil, & natural gas. Hence, this group is working actively to stop the licensing of any new project that will disrupt natural resources.
