The Cannonball Run was called off after only four races owing to safety concerns. The film depicted a rich businessman who devised a no-rules coast-to-coast race.
Gumball 3000 – the first one
Maximillion Cooper, a British designer and ex racecar driver, recruited 50 or more pals in 1999 to go on a 3,000-mile adventure throughout Europe. The rally’s entry fee would be $8,700, and wealthy competitors would be required to bring their individual Gumball Rally cars. Cooper used the name “Gumball” because it was coined by Andy Warhol to describe how the general public eats up and throws out pop culture like a chewing gum. The whole thing was designed to convey a rock ‘n’ roll vibe.
The Gumball 3000 conveyed drivers from London to Rimini, Italy, and returned. The tour would include a halt with an elaborate dinner or party each night, one of which was attended by Kate Moss, Guy Ritchie, and many others. Some suspect that Cooper alerted the press about Naomi Campbell’s participation, which contributed to the rally’s quick “cool” image but she was not among them.
To avoid legal ramifications, Cooper chose not to add any form of official time or present a reward. This did not deter cars from breaking speed restrictions during the next 15 years, exposing the rally to some criticism.
Gumball’s Golden Years
The Gumball 3000 had become a global sensation over the following few years, fueled by the prominence of the 2001-02 rallies. From 2003-06, there have been a record number of entries, with 192 automobiles participating in 2004. Cooper planned another trip throughout the United States at this time, as well as a couple of European tours. Travis Barker, Adrien Brody, tony hawk and Daryl Hannah were among a few of the celebs that attended, and the parties grew in size as Snoop Dogg and others performed.
In 2003, a Koenigsegg CC85 received a speeding citation in Texas for traveling 242 miles per hour on a 75 miles per hour stretch of road, which was one of the glories of this time period. It is said to be the world’s quickest speeding ticket.
On May 2, 2007, tragedy struck
Although Cooper and the Gumball team made it clear that the event was not a competition, it was evident that the participants weren’t there for a relaxing drive. The 2007 rally, which was supposed to run from London to Istanbul, got off to a rocky start when Dutch police impounded two vehicles, seven drivers had their licenses revoked, and 70 automobiles were detained by German cops. All of this, however, would pale in contrast to the horror that occurred later in the event.
Nick Morley and Matthew McConville’s TechArt Porsche 911 Turbo collided with a Volkswagen Golf on May 2, killing the VW’s driver and his wife.Morley was accused of driving at 100 miles per hour in court, which the defense said was false. Following the accident, the rally proceeded for a brief time before being canceled before the end of the 2007 course.
After the catastrophe in 2007, the rally resumed the following year for its tenth anniversary, bringing those who paid the $120,000 admission fee on a tour of the United States before crossing the border into China and finishing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
John Mayer, Joel McHale, David Hasselhoff, and a plethora of other celebrities were among the participants. The 2008 rally’s most intriguing feature was a one-night stay in North Korea, when rally participants attended the Mass Games (North Korea’s equivalent of the Olympics).
Then there were the mind boggling cars
While the Gumball 3000 has always been full of supercars and customized masterpieces, the rides that arrived in the following years pushed things to a whole new dimension. In 2010, Tony Hawk competed with numerous versions of the Batmobile, including the Tumbler, The InCENArator—a utopian ride that began as a Corvette. During the 2010 rally, Gumball even built up the world’s most valuable car park in Times Square for spectators to witness.
Conclusion
You should probably join up for Gumball 3000 if you own a supercar, have a lot of money, and want to be a part of one of the most spectacular adventures of all time. The once-secret rally has grown into a worldwide sensation complete with partying, stars, and sightseeing at breakneck speeds.
