Such outstanding performance caught the attention of Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who likened the Dutch prodigy to Ayrton Senna. Marko, recognizing Verstappen’s extraordinary talent, swiftly secured him a seat in Formula 1 for the 2015 season when he was just 17 years old—an unprecedented feat.

Becoming the youngest driver in F1 history, Verstappen achieved more milestones in the following years, including prompting the FIA to implement a minimum age requirement of 18 for F1 participation starting in 2016, a rule change attributed to his early entry into the sport without even possessing a driver’s license at the time.
The gateway to Formula 1, the Super License, introduced in the 1990s, serves as a crucial qualification for drivers.
The FIA has established specific criteria for awarding a Super License, including age, a valid driving license, an International Grade A competition license, knowledge of the F1 Sporting Code and Regulations, completion of two full seasons in a single-seater competition, a minimum of 40 points in an FIA-recognized series over three years, and a 300km test in an official F1 session or an FIA-approved test.
Fees Structure
According to FIA regulations, drivers must pay an annual fee to renew their Super License for the next season.
The fee structure comprises a standard base amount of €10,400 (~$11,000) plus an additional €2,100 (~$2,245) for each championship point earned. As a result, the renewal cost varies based on a driver’s performance in the previous season, with higher point totals translating to higher fees.
Notable examples include Sebastian Vettel’s 2013 season, where he secured his fourth consecutive championship with a total of 397 points, resulting in a renewal fee of €844,100.
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time champion, faced a hefty fee of €867,200 for his outstanding 2018 season with 408 points. Breaking his own record in 2019, Hamilton’s renewal fee reached €877,700 for amassing 413 points.
However, the record for the highest Super License renewal fee belongs to Max Verstappen in 2022. Piloting the RB18, Verstappen clinched a record-breaking 15 race wins out of 22, accumulating a staggering 454 points.
Consequently, his renewal fee amounted to an equally impressive €963,800 (~$1,030,000).
Max Verstappen is set to achieve a historic milestone with the renewal of his Super License in 2024, marking the highest ever in Formula 1 history.
The current season has been nothing short of extraordinary for Verstappen and the Red Bull team. While their performance in 2022 was formidable, 2023 has proven to be a year of near invincibility.
Should Verstappen aim to preserve his finances, he might willingly forego earning any more points, given that his current tally stands at 524, resulting in a renewal fee of €1,110,800 (~$1,187,000).
Nevertheless, Verstappen being Verstappen, his innate drive for victory prevails, especially in 2023. In the event that he secures victories in both races and achieves the fastest laps, his total could surge to 576, surpassing his 2022 record by an impressive 122 points. Consequently, his renewal fee would skyrocket to a staggering €1,220,000 (~$1,300,000).
