A Google Doodle is a unique but transient rendition of the Google logo that appears on the homepage of the website to honour special occasions, occasions, and historical personalities. Some incredible individuals, such as Frida Kahlo and Stephen Hawking, have been honoured with a Doodle, but today, November 4, 2022, the focus is on Jollof rice.

A Google Doodle honouring jollof rice is over Google Doodle today. The West African food is prepared in the animation by combining rice, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and local spices to make a mouthwatering-looking one-pot dinner. 

The doodle’s visuals were produced by Nigerian-born guest artist Haneefah Adam, while the music was composed by Senegalese jazz musician Hervé Samb. “I was quite excited,” Haneefah remarked. “The possibility of having my work appear on the Google homepage was pretty exciting.” 

“This is a celebration of culture, not only of my background but of everyone who views food as a vehicle” according to Haneefah. 

The Doodle shows users of the search engine a straightforward demonstration of how the dish is prepared, ostensibly in stop motion, with the word “Google” being represented by a pot of jollof rice.

Jollof Rice Is Celebrated By Google, But Why?

Google is commemorating the meal because every year on November 4, rice farmers in West Africa plant and harvest their crops, allowing cooks to begin making fresh Jollof. 

Modern Senegal, the Gambia, and Mauritania were under the sovereignty of the Wolof Empire, which also popularised the dish across the rest of West Africa. Though traditionally prepared with fish for dinner, many now eat this savoury dish for breakfast and lunch as well, substituting chicken, beef, or goat for the fish.

Each nation has given the recipe its own unique twist, and West Africans joke about who produces the best rendition of the dish. The “Jollof Wars,” as these amicable rivalries are known, has taken on a cultural significance unique to Africa. 

Haneef added, “The variety in how we approach food is extremely fascinating, as evidenced by the variations in Jollof preparation between Senegal and Nigeria. Even their names are different. This merely serves to highlight the beauty and richness of our continent’s overall culture.”
