Born on October 24, 1992, Ding Liren is a Chinese Chess Grandmaster. He is a reigning World Chess Champion. The winner of Chess Grand Tour 2019, is a three time Chinese Chess Champion.
Standing at 1.62m, the 32-year-old Chinese Chess Grandmaster is widely known for his calm and composed demeanor. Liren in April 2023 become a viral sensation within the chess community, when he bagged the title of World Chess Championship.
His ability to remain calm and relaxed during the high-pressure moments, instantly gained widespread attention to various playful memes.

‘Ding Chilling’ meme reportedly draws inspiration from the earlier viral ‘Bing Chilling’ meme, that gained traction in 2021.
Bing Chilling meme came to the spotlight when actor-wrestler John Cena took to the social media platform in 2021 and shared a video of himself sitting in a car, speaking Mandarin while holding an ice cream cone.
In his video, he was referred to the treat as “Bing qi lin,” translated to Ice cream in English, which sounded like “Bing Chilling” to English audience.

The viral video instantly become hit, sparking numerous memes. Later, in April 2023, Liren’s victory again spread the evolution of memes surrounding him including the now viral-meme Ding Chilling.
During Liren’s first match as World Champion, a clip of him calmly sitting in a side room was posted by the official page of Chess on the photo-sharing platform Instagram, humorously captioned to highlight his “chilling” demeanor.
Fans flooded the post with comments like “Ding Chilling,” and the meme took off. Since then, more videos of Ding in relaxed moments during matches have surfaced, much to the delight of the chess community.
The ‘Ding Chilling’ meme even made its way into a press conference on December 1, 2024, after Ding’s game against Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh.

When asked if he was aware of the memes, which connect him to John Cena’s ice cream-themed video, Ding innocently replied that he hadn’t had any ice cream, leaving the room and even Gukesh in stitches.
