Red cards and yellow cards have the potential to play an instrumental role in determining a team’s outcome during the World Cup.
Back in Russia 2018, Japan moved on to the Round of 16 in Group H past Senegal. The decision was made based on the number of cards both teams received after the first six tiebreakers.
New Red Card Rules For Coaches
Following the new red card rules, coaches will receive the same rules as players on receiving a red card. Coaches who receive a red card during the Qatar 2022 World Cup will have to immediately leave the field and also face a suspension for the next match.
Coaches To Receive Yellow Cards
Over the recent years, coaches have become the centre of scrutiny in regards to yellow and red cards. Before 2019, referees could deliver only verbal warnings to coaches for their behaviors on the pitch before sending them off.
However, the Qatar 2022 World Cup features a new set of rules for coaches and assistants. Following the new rules, coaches and assistants can now formally receive yellow cards. In addition, the yellow cards will carry the same consequences as the ones for players.
As such, coaches can get up to two yellow cards and a subsequent red card in a single match. Referees can give a yellow card to coaches during a World Cup match as an official caution to change their behaviour. Moreover, once coaches accumulate upto two yellow cards (one per game), they will receive a suspension (same way as players).
