After Awkwafina controversy, videos of KPop groups BTS and BLACKPINK using Blaccent and AAVE have gone viral on social media platforms
Ever since Golden Globe award winner, 33 year old Awkwafina was nominated for ‘Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance’ NAACP Image Award, which honors black performers for her work as Sisudatu, or Sisu the dragon all hell has broken loose.
Members of the black community have been irked with Nora Lum’s continuos usage of Blaccent and AAVE in her videos, movies and shows. Despite making outlandish claims about not working in projects which asked her to portray a typical Asian accent, Awkwafina had no qualms in persistently using Blaccent with her since going onto quit Twitter as she talked about how it had become an ingrown toenail.

Both the groups performances and songs have have strong racial tones be it from lyrics to the appearances of the group members with such videos now going viral. BLACKPINK’s Lisa had come under fire after she was seen sporting box braids in her song LaLisa, a decision which had seen her been put to the sword.
However, it wasn’t an isolated incident with people across Korean pop unabated in their usage of Blaccent with them refusing to acknowledge or owe up to the antics which have continued over time as their following continues to surge.
Blaccent is a combination of the words black and accent and is when a non-black person imitates black English and uses African American Vernacular English (AAVE),
