Featuring for Spain in their opener against Egypt on Thursday, things couldn’t have gone more wrong for Ceballos. The Spanish midfielder was taken off after being the recipient of a horrendous tackle, one which left him withering in pain.
Egypt U23 vs Spain U23 Tokyo Olympics Live: Dani Ceballos Suffers Torrid Ankle Injury
Taher Mohamed ran straight into Ceballos in a bid to win the ball in the 43rd minute. It was a shocking bit of play, one which saw him trod on Ceballos’ ankle to leave the Real Madrid player in anguish.
The absurd challenge ended up only getting a yellow card from the referee. Ceballos wasn’t the only player forced to leave the tie owing to injury with Barcelona’s Oscar Mingueza departing the match earlier ensuing a torrid tackle by Ahmed Fotouh. Despite referring to the VAR monitor, the referee decided that a yellow card was enough for the tackle which ended Oscar’s tie.
The Spanish FA have meanwhile provided an update on Ceballos’ injury with the association saying that the player had sustained an ankle injury. While any impending outcome will only come after further medical tests, Ceballos looks set to miss his country’s match against Australia.
Egypt’s malicious tactics meanwhile managed to work in their favour as the side ended up with a 0-0 draw on the day. Hard tackling and resolute defending was enough to parry away Spain’s attacking endeavours in the two country’s Tokyo Olympics 2021 opening matchup on Thursday.
