Following Spurs’ tie with the Blues, the manager of both teams got into a heated argument. After the game’s conclusion, managers of Chelsea and Tottenham, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel, respectively, were handed out red cards for their second physical incident of the game.

Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel clash on the touchline after Chelsea’s tie with Spurs
Chelsea hosted rivals from London on the second game day of the 2022–23 Premier League season. Both teams had won their first games and were hoping to win two straight, but the game ended in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge and featured plenty of tension. The game’s high point was the altercation between the managers of the two clubs on the sidelines, which was overshadowed only by Harry Kane’s equaliser in stoppage time that prevented Chelsea from earning all three points. Antonio Conte, the manager of Tottenham, and Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea, engaged in a verbal altercation twice, and both times they received punishment.

The first incident occurred when Pierre-Emile Hojberg equalised for the North London team in the game’s 68th minute. Despite what appeared to be a foul on Kai Havertz by Rodrigo Bentancur, the Dane scored from outside the box. Following Conte’s celebration of Hojbjerg’s goal, Tuchel confronted the Italian indignantly over the alleged Bentancur foul.
The main talking point about the game, though, was after the final whistle, when both managers got into another furious argument at the sidelines. Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea, approached Antonio Conte to shake his hand after the referee blew the full-time whistle. Tuchel completed the handshake, but as soon as he did, the confrontation between the two managers erupted into a heated argument. Conte seems to have been irritated by Tuchel’s handshake because he wasn’t looking at the Chelsea boss when the handshake happened.
After Sunday’s 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham, Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte were questioned about personal thoughts on the heated exchange. While Conte did not want to discuss the event that was the highlight of the game, the Chelsea coach was a little more direct in his remarks.
