Watch Sunil Chettri Goal: Chettri Scores Twice In India vs Bangladesh, Goes Past Lionel Messi In International Football Goals Tally

Sunil netted twice for the Indians in the India vs Bangladesh football FIFA World Cup qualifier matchup to guide the side to a 2-0 win on the night

Floundering in their qualification campaign for the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup, India knew another winless result on Monday would all but end the side’s chances of leaving its impact on the international stage.

Taking on 186th ranked Bangladesh, for India, this was a golden chance to rake in an elusive win. After their 1-0 defeat on June 3, the Igor Stimac lead side was in dire need of the three points when it took on a side 81 ranking places below it in the international rankings.

Changing their approach as promised by Spanish Stimac, India for perhaps the first time under him started off as the more dominant force. Attacking from the opening whistle, the Indians launched an onslaught at Bangladesh’s goal.

However, it wasn’t until the 74th minute that India were rewarded for their relentless forays at the opposition’s goal. Made to huff and puff until then, the Indians finally managed to break the deadlock as captain Sunil Chettri found the back of the net.

The striker scored from a left sided corner as connected to send him a powerful header past the goal-keeper. And Chettri rightfully wrapped the match up for India as well as he scored his and his side’s second on the night in the third minute of added time to take India to a 2-0 win.

The two goals for Sunil took him up to 74 international goals to see him surpass Argentina and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. The three points saw India make strides to move upto third spot in the Group E FIFA 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers.

While the win didn’t change the fact that India can’t qualify for next year’s world cup, the result was a massive boost in the arm for the side which is now striving to make it into the Asian Cup in 2023.
