History of Boston Celtics and Kyrie Irving
Since departing Boston after the 2018-19 season, Kyrie Irving, who played for the team for two seasons from 2017 to 2019, says he has grown accustomed to being booed by Celtics fans. After several recent discussions with fans over the last couple of years, Irving has received even more ire from the fan base.
Irving stated before the 2018-19 season that he intended to sign a long-term contract with the Celtics, only to change his mind at the end of the season and join the Nets. Last season, following Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the Celtics, Irving trod on the Celtics emblem at centre court and was then pelted with a water bottle by a fan as he made his way off the floor.
Verbal Abuse of Kyrie Irving and Irving’s Response
Despite the fact that Irving is a former Boston player, many Celtics fans despise him and verbally insulted him throughout the game. At TD Garden on Sunday, NBA and Brooklyn Nets superstar Irving was having none of the trash comments directed at him. A fan recorded himself telling Irving that he “sucks” during the game, and the replied him by saying “suck my d*ck b*tch.”
Kyrie Irving also appeared to give a fan the middle finger during the game. Irving appeared to have no patience for the heckling directed at him by the Boston fans, as he interacted with them multiple times. Several times on the court and verbally off of it, he flicked at the audience. It’s evident that he was offended by something said or done, but it’s unclear what exactly prompted such a reaction from Kyrie Irving.
In the end, Brooklyn Nets lost but Kyrie Irving scored 39 points against the Boston Celtics despite the negative atmosphere.
