After her Blaccent and AAVE videos went viral on Twitter, Awkwafina or Nora Lum as she’s normally known as decided to quit the platform

Winner of the Golden Globe, Awkwafina or Nora Lum as she’s originally own as has come under immense fire from the black community after videos of her doing the blaccent came to light.

It comes in the wake of her being nominated for the ‘Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance’ NAACP Image Award, which traditionally only honours black performers. Her nomination for her work as Sisudatu, or Sisu the dragon, in the Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon wasn’t taken to kindly be people with them reminding how she had over the years gone onto use African American Vernacular English which also referred to as a blaccent.

Blaccent which is a combination of black and accent is referred to when a person of the non-black community tried to emulate the style in which they speak English. While she finally addressed the outrage over her videos, her lengthy posts were more an attack on the people hitting out at her with her speaking out how she would be quitting Twitter.

Funnily enough, despite having shot scores of videos doing the Blaccent, she had made outlandish comments of quitting projects owing to accent requirements, “I’ve walked out of auditions where the casting director all of a sudden changed her mind and asked for accents. I refuse to do accents. And I think like – so far, like a lot of the parts I’ve gone out for have been really real characters and being Asian is not part of their plotline.”
