After criticising Brazil’s new president, former F1 world champion Nelson Piquet is the subject of a recent controversy. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidential elections in Piquet’s country by only defeating incumbent far-right Jair Bolsonaro.
Piquet, a 70-year-old resident of Rio de Janeiro, was upset with the election’s outcome and was caught on camera criticising Silva. Piquet, who is seen in the video footage sporting face paint on both cheeks, is sitting next to a man who announces: “Look who I’m with here, this huge champion Nelson Piquet.”
In a statement, the federal prosecutor’s office in Brasilia said that it will look into allegations that Piquet incited violence and stoked tensions between the military and other departments of government.
Piquet was heavily criticised for using homophobic and racial slurs against Hamilton earlier this year.
Piquet won three Formula One world championships: the first two in 1981 racing for Brabham, while the third in 1987 with Williams. The Brazilian was denounced by the Formula One community earlier this year after a video from 2021 that showed him using homophobic and racial slurs to refer to Lewis Hamilton surfaced. The Brazilian received widespread criticism from F1, drivers, teams, and the regulatory body FIA. Even though the remarks were “poorly thought out,” Piquet eventually apologised to Hamilton and said they were not meant to be insulting.
