Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal and set a new national record with a throw of 89.30 meters, bettering his previous national record of 87.58 meters, which he set last year to help him win gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Chopra competed in the Paavo Nurmi Games, Finland’s main summer track and field event, which has been held every year since 1957. The Paavo Nurmi Games honour the renowned Finnish middle and long distance runner Paavo Nurmi. It’s a Gold series event on the World Athletics Continental Tour, one of the most prominent contests outside of the Diamond League Meetings.

The organizers of the competition had added an extra incentive for javelin throwers: anyone who throws further than the Finnish record of 93.09 meters will win a Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV. On Tuesday, no one won it, despite Peters jokingly stating on Monday that he would go for it. The event drew a crowd of almost 10,000 spectators.
On Saturday, Chopra will compete in the Kourtane Games in Finland, where he is now living. On June 30, he will compete in the Diamond League’s Stockholm leg.
