The Netherlands defeated the USA 3-1 to go to the quarterfinals.
After defeating the USA at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday, the Netherlands became the first side to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Qatar World Cup 2022. Daley Blind and Memphis Depay each scored once to put the Netherlands up 2-0 at the break. Denzel Dumfries’ magnificent third goal put the game away and put the Dutch on track to advance to the quarterfinals, despite Haji Wright’s one heroic goal for the US.
Argentina defeated Australia 2-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
In Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup victory against Australia on Saturday, Lionel Messi scored on his 1,000th career appearance to surpass his legendary predecessor Diego Maradona’s tournament record and set up a matchup with the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Messi, 35, now has nine goals in World Cups, one more than Maradona, and three in the Qatar tournament.
However, despite holding a two-goal advantage, the game’s closing stages were much tenser than Argentina would have anticipated. After Australia had successfully managed the first third of the game, Messi’s brilliant moment occurred in the 35th minute. In the second half, Julian Alvarez caught Aussie goalkeeper Mat Ryan on the ball and stole the ball from his blindside on the right before slotting it into the net to score his country’s second goal in a superb display of opportunism.
Later on, Australia led 2-1 after a huge deflection off Enzo Fernandez. Now, Argentina will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. However, for the USMNT, it’s back to the drawing board as they prepare to co-host the next tournament with Canada and Mexico in four years.
