On Friday night, violence broke out in Leicester, England, where hundreds of people had gathered in the eastern part of the city. Following the India-Pakistan cricket match for the Asia Cup on August 28, armed Islamists attacked Hindus and their homes nearby in a wave of targeted attacks.

Following a demonstration by Hindus calling for action against Islamist violence, police officers have flooded Leicester’s streets, using their dispersal powers and promoting tranquilly. Islamists interfered with the rally by throwing glass bottles at the demonstrators. A group of Islamists also vandalised a Saffron flag in front of the cops.

Leicestershire police have released a statement.

The Leicestershire police claimed that on Saturday night, a group of men organised a “unplanned protest,” which resulted in the outbreak of violence. Parts of East Leicester “saw severe disruption yesterday evening (Saturday, September 17) into this morning (Sunday), when large groups assembled after gangs of young males staged an impromptu demonstration,” according to the statement.

Violence that followed India’s victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup

After India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup match on August 28, violence broke out in Leicester. According to reports, Muslims in the area—mostly Pakistani Islamists—attacked Hindus and their homes. A week after the incident, several videos of it went viral.

The videos showed Hindus being attacked in their parked cars and Hindu families hiding inside their homes in shock as large groups roamed the streets damaging property. Most of these violent episodes and incendiary religious sloganeering were located in the city’s Belgrave neighbourhood.
