Most recently, it happened when MLB reporter Tom Verducci revealed that an Astros player used an “illegal bat” in Game 1 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies during the broadcast of Game 2.
The information exposed Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado used an “illegal bat,” which was given by Albert Pujols gave to him. Maldonado claimed he wanted to use the bat since it resembled his original bat in terms of size and as a way to pay homage to the baseball great.

In the postseason, there was significant controversy surrounding the Houston Astros. It was discovered that the bat used in Game 1 by catcher Martin Maldonado, who obtained it from former Los Angeles Angels colleague and St. Louis Cardinals hitter Albert Pujols, was really illegal.
Since Maldonado had to use his old baseball bat for Game 2, many people questioned why the bat was deemed unlawful.
Well, ESPN’s Marly Rivera gave a justification for this. She mentioned that an MLB representative claimed that using Pujols’ bat wasn’t a matter of competition. Instead, “multipiece bat failures that happened on the field” were the problem, which endangered player safety.
MLB prohibited this kind of bat in 2010, but Pujols was still permitted to use it. This is due to the fact that any player who competed before the 2010 ban was technically allowed to use the bat. Therefore, Pujols continued to use the bat afterward.
Does It Actually Affect The Match?
Game 1’s second inning saw Maldonado get an RBI single. Later in the game, the Astros grabbed a 5-0 lead, but the Phillies matched it and made it go into extra innings. After J.T. Realmuto blasted a single home run at the beginning of the 10th inning, the Phillies would go on to win Game 1.
As a result, the RBI single that Maldonado hit with Pujols’ bat did not significantly affect the game’s final score. However, certain fan bases’ rage would have reached abnormal heights if the Astros had won.
