Messi’s evening was put in jeopardy when Kylian Mbappe, a teammate of Messi’s at Paris Saint-Germain, entered the game. After Messi celebrated in front of Mbappe earlier in the game, the Frenchman took his moment to get payback by celebrating in the same manner.
The 23-year-old struck twice in 90 seconds to put France back on equal terms. Mbappe is said to feel devalued by Messi’s presence in Paris, leading to friction between the two at the club level.
Mbappe prefers playing on the wing, but with Messi in the lineup, he has been forced to play in the centre. Messi scored again in overtime, so that wasn’t even the final word between the two. However, with only three minutes remaining, Messi scored to force penalties.
After Messi and Mbappe scored from the penalty spot, Gonzalo Montiel scored the game-winning penalty, and Emi Martinez saved both of their attempts.
