With significant tennis drama surrounding Kyrgios and his entourage in the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Australian 23rd seed won the opening set 7-6(11) in a tiebreaker against the world No. 1.
Kyrgios earned his own set point after saving three in the tiebreak. With coaching now permitted on the court, he asked his players to box where to serve.
When the Russian saved the set point, Kyrgios yelled at his team in annoyance:
I asked you where to f***ing serve.”
On his fourth attempt to finish off the first set, the fiery Australian was able to gather himself and prevail. After the thrilling opening set, Kyrgios left the court to change clothing, and Medvedev accused the Australian team of making noise when the Australian player served, threatening to quit if it happened again.
When speaking with the chair umpire, Medvedev made threats, saying:
“If they do it again, I’m not playing,”
In the second set, where Kyrgios’ dependable serve failed him down early on, the 2021 US Open champion came out with newfound determination and sprinted to a 3-0 lead.
In irritation, Kyrgios slammed a loose ball into the wall of the centre court, just inches from passing above the wall and hitting a spectator.

Kyrgios could have been declared in default for the incident under tennis regulations, which would have resulted in his automatic elimination from the competition.
The epic encounter appeared destined to go the distance as Medvedev closed off the second set 6-3 despite Kyrgios’ late comeback.
The Australian will square off against Karen Khachanov of Russia, the 27th seed, in the quarterfinal of the last Grand Slam of the year.
Meanwhile, on the Monday following the US Open exit, Medvedev will drop from first to second in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. The new World No. 1 will either be Casper Ruud, Carlos Alcaraz, or Rafael Nadal.
