More About Dog Laws In India

According to the 1960 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, street dogs are protected by the law. Removal or relocation of dogs is prohibited by the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001.

Government employees who hurt animals are subject to special sanctions, according to an office memo from 2006 (OMG).

The Delhi High Court has detected a rise in the flouting of these laws in June 2021. According to Justice J. R. Midha, widespread erroneous or mistaken ideas that all street dogs contain the rabies virus can lead to the harsh maltreatment of stray animals.

The Court had argued that dogs had a legal right to be treated with decency, empathy, and respect. As a result, every citizen, including governmental and non-governmental groups, has a moral obligation to safeguard them.
