History of the Vijay Hazare Trophy
From the 1993–1994 season, when the tournament was originally held, through the 2001–2002 season, teams only played inside their own zones, and there was no overall winner.
During the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, the top clubs in each zone engaged in a final round-robin stage of the competition. Although the formats have evolved, a playoff system involving semi-finals and a final has been in place since the 2004–05 competition.
Format of Vijay Hazare Trophy
While the other four runners-up compete in the preliminary quarterfinals after facing each team in the group once, the five group winners and the best-performing runner-up move directly to the quarterfinal round. The two pre-quarterfinal champions join the remaining six teams in the quarterfinal round. From 2015–16 through the 2017–18 seasons, four groups of seven individuals stood in for the zonal groups.
For the 2018–19 season, the teams were divided into 3 elite groups and 1 plate group. Ten teams make up the third elite group, compared to nine in the second-place elite group. The plate group is made up of nine new teams. Teams are classified based on their average points over the previous three seasons.
