After becoming the only winner across Round 9 matches of open division in US Chess Championships, Sam Shankland has established himself as one of strong contenders to win title. During his Round 9 match, Sam Shankland was able to defeat Christopher Yoo and increased his point tally to five points from nine matches. In the meantime, Ray Robson’s three-match win streak snapped after his draw against Alex Lenderman.

Saint Louis Chess Club is hosting 2022 edition of prestigious US Chess Championships, which started on 4th October. Ahead of rare rest day on Sunday, Round 10 matches will be played on Saturday and carry great importance. 2022 US Chess Championship Day 9 Results, Score, Winners, Standings, & Round 10 Schedule
At the 2022 US Championship, nine rounds have culminated and with only four rounds remaining, tension has grown heavy among title contenders and it was also evident during Saturday’s matches. Despite stretching the match till 113th move, Dominguez failed to defeat Samuel Sevian and instead settled for a draw.
Elsewhere, Ray Robson tried to win his fourth straight match but could only muster his draw after 89 moves against Alex Lenderman. Among all Round 9 matches of open division, only Sam Shankland vs Christopher Yoo ended decisively with a win for Shankland. Leader Fabiano Caruana was also in search for a win to extend his lead at top but couldn’t find his way through Awonder Liang and settled for draw.
In Round 9 matches of women’s division, Megan Lee surrendered her exclusive lead at top after being stunned by Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova. Meanwhile, Jennifer Yu took advantage of this result and won her tie against Ashritha Eswaran to capture leadership. However, in most surprising result of day, eight-time champion Irina Krush was held to draw against 13-year-old prodigy Alice Lee, who is presently in sole possession of fourth place with a score of 5.5/9.
During round 10 on Saturday, youngster Christopher Yoo will face off against leader Fabiano Caruana while second-placed Ray Robson will face a tricky match against Samuel Sevian. Friday’s lone winner Sam Shankland will be hoping to continue his winning run against Jeffery Xiong and reduce gap between him and leader Fabiano Caruana.

For open division of 2022 US Chess Championships, total prize pool will be $262,000 and for women’s division, it will be $160,500. As per announcement, winner of open division will bag $60,000 prize money while women’s division champion will be awarded $40,000 prize money.
