Unmukt Chand who was a household name after winning the Under 19 world cup in 2012 has now retired as an Indian cricketer and speculations are that he might play for the USA.
Unmukt Chand who is just 28 announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in India. He took on Twitter where he announced the commencement of his next innings. Unmukt Chand did well domestically and in the under 19 levels but failed miserably to continue his form at the senior level.
He played 21 IPL matches scoring just 300 runs on an average of 15.0 with a strike rate of just 100. With these stats, he was not given a chance to debut for the senior team.
USA Career Looming For Unmukt Chand After He Retired From Indian Cricket
USA is interested in forming a strong cricket team by attracting players like Unmukt Chand who are talented but didn’t get a chance for their nation, asking them to play for the USA. There were speculations that the USA might contact Unmukt Chand with an offer like that now the Chand has announced his retirement. Not only that, he also signed a contract with Major League Cricket, the USA’s T20 league.
Unmukt Chand’s Dwindling Career And Inability To Make Him Name On The Big Stage
Even though his career was nosedived after he led the U-19 Team to triumph in 2012, he still possesses some talent. But because of his flop IPL career, he was not given much chance to play. Also in the likes of players like K.L. Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav who all contest for the top order spot in the team it was quite impossible for Unmukt Chand to play.
And the BCCI doesn’t allow any Indian player to play in a foreign league before retirement. Therefore to get a chance to play in a league and also to maybe represent a nation he took the step.
The BCCI should amend some of its laws to allow a cricketer to play in a foreign league without retiring. This will only help the player to develop and his game won’t suffer.
