Alex Pereira defeats Israel Adesanya.
Only Alex Pereira has ever defeated Israel Adesanya, and he’s done it twice. At UFC 281, Pereira overcame a deficit to defeat Adesanya on Saturday night in Madison Square Garden to win the middleweight title.
Adesanya will find the struggle to be a difficult pill to swallow. Adesanya was leading until he wasn’t, just like in their two kickboxing matches. Adesanya almost joined the seven first-round knockouts at UFC 281 with a one-two that put Pereira in serious danger.
Adesanya was ahead going into the last period on all three judges’ scorecards, which was confirmed by the UFC broadcast post-fight. In response to the call, Pereira rushed Adesanya and slammed him against the fence with hard strikes. Until the referee stepped in, Adesanya desperately dodged and weaved but took huge blows and uppercuts.
Through a translator, Pereira thanked his teammates for the win and said to UFC announcer Joe Rogan that he had been training just as hard as he had for the match. Pereira’s main training partner and former UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira later related a chat he had with Pereira between the fourth and fifth rounds to the on-air analysts.
Pereira (7-1) won his fourth UFC match to win the middleweight title. Adesanya (23-2) made five successful title defences while reigning as middleweight king since October 2019.
