UEFA based its design on broad talks with key stakeholders in the European football community to guarantee the new 2024/25 model delivers the best for clubs, players, and fans. Both the European Club Association (ECA) Board and the UEFA Club Competitions Committee unanimously endorsed the modifications on April 19. (composed of a majority of club representatives).

“This evolved format will keep alive the dream of any team in Europe to compete in the UEFA Champions League based on on-field results, and it will ensure long-term viability, prosperity, and growth for everyone in European football, not just a tiny, self-selected cartel,” said UEFA President Aleksander eferin.

What Will the do Competition Look Like In 2024/25?

The departure from the current format’s opening 32-team group stage is a key move announced by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting on April 19, 2021. Participants are divided into eight groups of four during the current Champions League season. From the 2024/25 season onwards, all 36 competing clubs will compete in a single league. This will provide four additional teams the chance to fight against Europe’s best clubs.

Teams will play four more matches under the new structure than they do now. They will no longer face the same three opponents twice – at home and away – but will instead play 10 different teams, half at home and half away. This allows clubs to compete against a larger spectrum of opponents, while also increasing the likelihood of fans seeing the best teams face off more frequently earlier in the season. The new format should ensure that there is more to play for until the league’s final night.

How Will the Four Extra Spots Be Distributed?

Qualification for the Champions League will remain open and will be determined by a club’s final position in the domestic league tournament the previous season. The remaining four berths in 2024/25 will be distributed based on three separate criteria:
