In an exciting battle that went down to the wire in Bangkok, South Korea surprised reigning champions China to win badminton’s prestigious Uber Cup on Saturday. China, the tournament’s most successful team, was looking for their 16th title in the women’s global team championship but failed to clear the last hurdle. Korea, on the other hand, won their second title and first in 12 years in a thrilling conclusion.
Chen, the world number three and Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo, lost the first game to fourth-ranked An 21-17. An had a five-point lead early in the second game, but Chen stormed back to win that game 21-15 and the decider 22-20 despite an ankle injury concern.
However, South Korea won both doubles matches to bring the match towards a decider match. With the score tied at 2-2, the match between China’s 15th-ranked Wang Zhiyi and Korea’s 46th-ranked Sim Yu-jin came down to a singles match. Sim, who turned 23 on Friday, stunned Wang by defeating him 28-26, 18-21, 21-8 in a thrilling 88-minute match, giving South Korea its first Uber Cup title in 12 years.
