What Happens Now?

Katie Price, a television personality, and Jack Fincham from Love Island popularised the TikTok fad. Following a peg-down filing of the teeth, individualised crowns and veneers are fitted. 130 million people have viewed the hashtag #Turkeyteeth on the platform.

The goal is to have the “perfect smile,” yet the surgery leaves patients in severe pain and with astronomical medical expenses. For her son’s wedding, Lisa Martyn wanted the ideal smile, so she got the operation. She now experiences nerve sensitivity and constant pain.

Not Value for The Money

Lisa, 48, admitted to flying to Turkey for 26 veneers to the BBC. But now that she’s received the wrong care, she’s forced to think about getting dentures.

Veneers are applied on teeth that have barely been shaved. She learned she had crowns, when 60 to 70 per cent of the natural tooth is removed, months after the procedure.

She remarked, “They never said your teeth can die or that you can develop an abscess. They’re filed down so much.”

Lisa has dropped two stones after the treatment since she can’t eat properly because of the injury. She spent €3,500 on her initial operation in Turkey and has since added another €2,000 on root canal procedures.

Financially, she will be crippled, but she acknowledges that this is the price she must pay after travelling to Turkey and having all of her teeth filed down.

What Say the Dentists in The UK?

Dr MJ Rowland-Warmann said to the BBC, “If I did 20 crowns on a 21-year-old to improve the colour, I would have my licence revoked, I would be struck off.”

According to a BBC study, 6/10 dentists in the UK stated they had dealt with the effects of the “Turkey teeth” craze. 1/5 continued by stating that the repairs had cost more than $5,000. Only a few of the repair procedures are supplied by the NHS.

The head of the BDA has stated, “We strongly advise anybody thinking about this to check a dentist’s qualifications and expertise and whether they are covered if things go wrong.”

The Power of Inspiring People

Before entering the villa, Love Island winner Jack Fincham was one of the first to participate in the craze. “Because my mother worked as a dental nurse, I am aware of how expensive dental work can be. I was aware that it would be easily between £10,000 and £15,000 in England. I decided it would be best to travel to Turkey and enjoy some sun and laughter.”

Searches for “Turkey teeth” increased when he went on to discuss his treatment on the programme.

Even though not everyone returns with issues, the ‘Turkey teeth’ craze has left some people, like Lisa, with long-lasting effects.
