NCP leaders demand action

Wednesday saw prominent NCP leaders staging a protest outside the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office. Their grievance? The ‘derogatory’ content published on Indic Tales and Hindu Post. Leading the protest were Maharashtra’s Leader of the Opposition, Ajit Pawar, alongside former Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and NCP State Chief Jayant Patil.

The delegation, representing their concerns, met the head of the Mumbai city police department. They presented a letter bearing signatures from the NCP leaders, urging the closure of the implicated websites. The leaders argued that the articles not only tarnished Savitribai Phule’s legacy but were also designed to incite disturbances.

Leaders voice their concern

Chhagan Bhujbal remarked on the situation, emphasizing the misrepresentation of Savotribai Phule by Indic Tales and Hindu Post. He said, “They have made highly objectionable remarks that cannot be tolerated in a progressive state like Maharashtra. Savitribai Phule was a great social worker. She had done pioneering work in the field of women and education. She started the first school for women in Pune.”

Immediate action by the Chief Minister

Reacting promptly to the protest, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde tasked Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik with the responsibility of investigating the matter. Shinde affirmed that any derogatory comments towards revered public figures, such as Savitribai Phule, would face consequences.

An official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) elucidated the situation further: “The website ‘Indic Tales’ has written many objectionable things about Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule in its published article, and many political organizations and social organizations have raised objections to the government.” The statement urged content creators to exercise caution and maintain respect when addressing historical figures.

Twitter handle also implicated

It’s important to note that the FIR also includes the Twitter account TrueIndology, which has a lot of followers and adds another layer to the ongoing dispute.

In this digital age, the incident is a good lesson that content creators have a lot of responsibilities, like making sure their work is respectful and well-researched.
