In the forthcoming regional qualifying round for the Bangladesh-hosted Women’s T20 World Cup, she will proudly represent her adopted country, Canada. By meeting the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) requirements for male-to-female transgender athletes, Danielle McGahey, a 29-year-old opening batter, has secured her spot in Canada’s women’s team.

Canada will compete against teams from Argentina, Brazil, and the United States in the ICC Americas Qualification, which is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from September 4 to 11. This competition serves as a crucial stepping stone for securing a spot in the global qualifiers.

Who is Danielle McGahey?

Danielle McGahey is a well-known Australian-born Canadian cricketer. She has been in the news because she became the first transgender to get a chance to play international cricket.

She was born on 14 April 1994 in Australia. However, she later moved to Canada in 2020.

Danielle McGahey was born a man and began socially transitioning to live as a woman in November 2020. In May 2021, she started transitioning medically. However, during her transition journey, she lost touch with her family in Australia.

She is currently 29 years old but her height isn’t known.

Her career

Before moving to Canada, Danielle McGahey first competed for a men’s club team in Melbourne. She switched to a women’s team in Canada and played in the Alberta Women’s Cricket League as well because Saskatchewan didn’t have a women’s squad.

She became the leading scorer at the 2023 Women’s T20 National Championship, scoring 237 runs in only three innings, including the only century of the competition. She made headlines on a global scale when she was selected to play for Canada in the 2022 Women’s South American Cricket Championship in Brazil. Her outstanding 73-run effort earned her the Player of the Match award.

Danielle McGahey was chosen for Canada’s team in a historic decision for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier in Los Angeles.
