Tranmere Rovers have sacked Micky Mellon and here are the top 5 favourites
Mellon’s weekend home loss to Newport County, 3-1, was the cherry on top of a string of lately increasingly depressing press conferences.
Due to his team’s ongoing road troubles and unfavourable style of play, the Scot has gradually lost the trust of some fans since taking over as Rovers’ manager for a second time ahead of the 2021/22 season.
Tranmere scored the fewest goals (53) of any top 10 half team last season, and they are once again suffering this year.
Hopes of a late-season climb up the league were aroused last month after victories over Stevenage and Crawley and losses to Gillingham and Newport.
Nevertheless, such hopes were dashed after a scoreless draw at home against Hartlepool.
After being reappointed in May 2021, having previously led Tranmere in the 2019–2020 season when the team was demoted from League One on a points-per-game basis, Mellon said he had “unfinished business” at Tranmere, however, his ambition to bring Rovers additional success has now been thwarted.
On Saturday afternoon, the atmosphere in Prenton Park had soured by the time the final whistle went, with cries of “We want Micky out” could be heard.
However, the fans will always remember Mellon’s first term in that position, which lasted from 2016 to 2020.
