In the years that followed, Dow made more television appearances on series including “My Three Sons,” “Dr. Kildare,” “The Greatest Show on Earth,” “Never Too Young,” and five episodes of “Mr. Novak” in three distinct roles.

He then took a break from acting to serve in the U.S. National Guard from 1965 to 1968.

He had a cameo appearance on the TV shows “Adam-12,” “Love American Style,” “Knight Rider,” “Square Pegs,” “The Mod Squad,” “The Hardy Boys,” and “Emergency” after getting back into acting.

Tony Dow kept performing throughout the 1970s while working in construction, going to school for journalism, and creating movies. He played Wally Cleaver again in a reunion television movie and in the follow-up series “The New Leave It to Beaver” from 1983 until 1989. He also contributed to it by writing an episode.

He received the Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award from the Young Artist Foundation in 1987 for his portrayal of Wally Cleaver.
