In a dramatic quarterfinal in Bangkok on Thursday, India confirmed its first-ever Thomas Cup medal by defeating five-time champion Malaysia 3-2. After a 2-2 deadlock in the quarterfinals after both doubles and two singles sets, H S Prannoy defeated Leong Jun Hao 21-13, 21-8 in the third and deciding singles encounter.
Lakshya Sen, the bronze medalist at the World Championships, had lost the first singles match to Lee Zii Jia before Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the first doubles match against Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin to bring India back into the tie. Kidambi Srikanth won the second singles to put India up 2-1, but Aaron Chia and Teo Ee Yi won the second doubles to take the match to a third singles decider.
India had reached the semifinals three times before – in 1952, 1955, and 1979 – but only the finalists received medals at the time. However, India has confirmed a medal this time after reaching the final-four. In the semifinals on Friday, India will face Denmark, who defeated South Korea with a score of 3-2 in another quarter-final.
