Despite putting up a hard fight in Bangkok on Wednesday, May 11, India missed out on the top spot in Group C of the Thomas Cup 2022 after losing with a score of 2-3 to Chinese Taipei in their final group-stage clash. After 5-0 victories over Germany and Canada, India had already qualified for the quarter-finals.
India fell behind 0-1 early in the match after World Championship bronze winner Lakshya Sen was defeated in straight games by World No.4 Chou Tien Chen. Sen, who was rested for Tuesday’s encounter against Canada, battled back after losing the first game, but was unable to win the tiebreaker. In the lengthy struggle, Chen won 21-19, 13-21, 21-17 in one hour and 20 minutes.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s top-ranked doubles team, were defeated 21-11, 21-19 in 40 minutes by Lee Yang and Chi-Lin Wang, the World No. 3 combo. Kidambi Srikanth resumed his perfect run in the competition by thrashing Tzu Wei Wang 21-19, 21-16 in a must-win match in the second men’s singles encounter to make the tie 1-2.
