Naomi Osaka had decided to withdraw from the French Open earlier this year citing mental health issues

For Naomi Osaka, 2021 hasn’t been the best of years. She’s been mired by controversy ever since she refused to fulfill her media duties at the French Open earlier this year.

The Japanese had subsequently decided to altogether withdraw midway into the showpiece tournament as she had been issued a fine by the authorities for not complying with them. She had also gone onto skip the Wimbledon before she made her return to the circuit as she stepped out for the Tokyo Olympics.

However, despite facing no media responsibilities in her home country, Osaka was ousted in only the third round at the Olympics. She fared to do any better at the Western & Southern Open either where she was sent packing in the round of 16.

“Like whatever I feel, I’ll say it or do it. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I think there are a lot of things that I learned to do better. Of course, I don’t feel the same situation will happen again,” she added ahead of her appearance at Flushing Meadows.
