Which players will compete at The Match 2023?
Throughout it’s multiple editions, Capital One’s The Match event has raised almost $35 million for charitable causes. On June 29, The Match 2023 will be hosted at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. During this edition, NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce will compete against NBA’s Golden State Warriors duo Stephen Curry & Klay Thompson in a 12-hole matchup. Because the format is a scramble, each player from either side will take a shot, and the best of the two will be used. The team that has the lower combined score between the two wins the hole.
Curry is the most experienced golfer of the four men who will be present in 2023. It is known that the 35-year-old has played golf since he was 10-year-old and has even taken part in the Korn Ferry Tour. On this stage, Curry and Mahomes are well-known figures, which might allow room for Thompson or Kelce to make the difference. Out of 87 contestants, Kelce placed 64th in the 2022 American Century Championship held in Lake Tahoe. The Match doesn’t have a standard prize pool, but each player is vying to raise the most money for charity and for the 2023 edition, The No Kid Hungry initiative is announced as the charity.
However, previous iterations of the event have proved beneficial and the second version of the competition raised $20 million of COVID-19 relief, while the third netted $4.4 million for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
That hasn’t always been the case as Tiger Woods pocketed $9 million after vanquishing Phil Mickelson in the first edition of The Match.
