The Aggies’ decision to sack Jimbo Fisher will prove expensive, as he has a record $76 million contract buyout.

Texas A&M sacks head coach Jimbo Fisher

Texas A&M have made the bold decision to sack their head coach Jimbo Fisher despite carrying a hefty $76 million contract buyout. Although Texas has the backing of its oil-rich boosters, a $76 million buyout will undoubtedly leave a large hole. This will prove especially true when the school looks to pay another coach to get out of his contract join College Station.  Besides paying a hefty buyout for a new head coach, they will also have to brining assistant buyouts and new staff hires, which could make the whole ordeal well over a $150 million.

As fans and critics speculate the motive behind the sacking, some suggest that the school might have done it because their bitter rival Texas Longhorns will now enter the SEC next season. and you know A&M doesn’t want to fall further behind the Longhorns now that they will start playing again. Fisher had no ties to Texas when hired and by most accounts didn’t really fit in. Following the recent sacking, the Texas A&M’s decision to hand Jimbo Fisher a 10-year contract with $95 million guaranteed in 2021 now becomes one of the worst decisions in college football coaching history.

Next Texas A&M football coach possible candidates

Amongst all candidates, the two co-favorites to replace Fisher is UTSA’s Jeff Traylor and Duke’s Mike Elko. Traylor has led his UTSA side to back-to-back Conference USA titles aside from winning the league coach of the year honors consecutively in 2021 and 2022. Under his leadership, the Roadrunners are now in the AAC and share the first spot in the league. Traylor has a buyout of $7 million. Meanwhile, Elko is a former defensive coordinator under Fisher at Texas A&M and the current head coach of the Duke Blue Devils. While the Blue Devils have lost four of their six games, they are also dealing with several injuries. Elko has a buyout value of only $5 million.

Behind the pair is Kalen DeBoer, who currently leads an unbeaten Washington side that is set on winning the Pac-12 title and reaching the College Football Playoff. Just like Fisher, DeBoer is a very offensive-minded coach. Under him, the Huskies have a 21-2 record across two seasons. Oregon’s Dan Lanning, who has a $20 million buyout, is also a possible candidate to replace Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M.

Lane Kiffin is the current head coach of Ole Miss, who earns around $9 million at the moment. Kiffin has a lot of experience and can bring a level of visibility that other coaches cannot. Other possible candidates include Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Penn State’s James Franklin, and Urban Meyer or Deion Sanders. However, Meyer seems content with TV right now, while Sanders will probably not leave Colorado, at least while his sons play there.
