Arnett was fired by the school early on Monday, November 13, 2023. The Bulldogs’ record fell to 4-6 on Saturday after a 51-10 loss to Texas A&M. MSU is just 1-6 in SEC play this year, and this was their third straight defeat.

The American football coach, Arnett was hired by Mississippi State University on January 22, 2020, to be the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was fired by Mississippi State following a dismal 2023 campaign in which the Bulldogs’ only SEC victory came via a 7-3 overtime victory against Arkansas.

Arnett, the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, was promoted to head coach following the untimely death of Mike Leach in December of last year. The institution was searching for a new athletic director at the time Arnett was hired because John Cohen had left to take a job at Auburn just over a month before.

In their quest to add defensive coordinators this summer, several schools likely have Arnett on their shortlists. Most people consider Arnett to be among the greatest in the country and here is how much the school owns him after his departure.

With a $3 million yearly pay, Arnett inked a four-year contract. This season, he was the SEC’s lowest-paid coach, therefore his buyout was not that large. The 37-year-old coach will not be going out on a bad note following the termination of his employment.

Mississippi State must pay 50% of Arnett’s remaining $9 million salary as part of his buyout, according to paperwork obtained by The Clarion-Ledger. MSU might not be responsible for the full $4.5 million. If he finds another job, there are offset and mitigating clauses.

As per the reports, Arnett’s net worth is expected to be around $5 million.
