Following their comfortable victories on the opening day of Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023, Ding Liren and Nodirbek Abdusattorov managed to race for an early lead. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen was to held to a draw in his match similar to Indian prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and is sitting third.

Ding Liren and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who both won games on Saturday using the black pieces, shared the lead following the opening day of play at the Tata Steel Chess Masters. Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian’s match, which had been the most eagerly awaited of the round, was one of five matches that ended in draws. Notably, in addition to the two winners of the day, three additional players managed to marshal the black pieces into good positions, but Wesley So, Anish Giri, & Vincent Keymer were all unable to earn full points despite dominating their respective games.
In his first-round clash, Ding Liren managed to win against Indian prodigy Gukesh despite playing with the black pieces. Meanwhile, Abdusattorov managed to emerge victorious against Richard Rapport after 47 moves and join Ding at the top of the standings. On Saturday, these two were the only decisive games with all remaining matches ending in a draw including one for Indian ace Pragg. According to schedule, day 2 of Tata Steel Chess Masters will feature many more exciting games including Abdusattorov vs Caruana and Keymer vs Carlsen.
