We’re deeply saddened to tell you that Russell Hargreaves has passed away.
Russ was a talented commentator, news reader and reporter for our network.
But he was much more than that. A much loved friend and colleague to so many.
We’re devastated by his passing.

Russell was a London-based reporter, analyst, and host of live sports. Throughout his media career, Hargreaves covered a variety of sports, including football and golf, and was well-known for his rugby union commentary on TalkSport radio. He married Rachel in 2011, and the two of them had three kids. The cause of death is not yet known.
In 1996, he attended King Edward’s School before enrolling in Cambridge’s Pembroke College to study classics. Russell then graduated from City University London with a degree in journalism.
In August, Hargreaves shared a photo of himself at the Twickenham match between South Africa and New Zealand. He covered rugby in the summer. Before taking a sick leave of absence from work in September, he was also present at the Ryder Cup.
TalkSPORT released the following statement: “We’re very sorry to inform you of Russell Hargreaves’ passing. Russ was a gifted news reader, reporter, and pundit for our network. He was, however, much more than that. A dear friend and coworker to a great number of people. We are heartbroken by his loss. Farewell, Russ.”
Tributes pour in after the sudden demise of the broadcaster
Sports media have paid their respects to 45-year-old writer and broadcaster Russell Hargreaves. Speaking about Hargreaves, TalkSport’s CEO, Liam Fisher, called him a brilliant broadcaster, kind colleague, and good friend.
Adam Catterall, host of TalkSport, tweeted, “Very depressing. One of the most gifted reporters I’ve ever worked with was Russ. really enthusiastic about rugby and golf. I’ll never understand how he was able to fit so much information into such a small amount of time. Above all, he was a really pleasant man with a great sense of enthusiasm.”
Rugby players all over the world, including Harlequins, the team that Hargreaves played for, and England Rugby, tweeted their condolences, saying, “We are all very sorry to hear about the passing of journalist Russell Hargreaves.”

For over a decade, Hargreaves was a talkSPORT pundit. He worked on the sports radio station, covering rugby, football, and golf.
Russell was a fervent rugby fan, well-liked by his colleagues as a writer, and a regular at our press conferences and games. During this trying time, our thoughts are with his friends, colleagues, and family.
