Currently, the T20 World Cup has been played eight times, with eight different nations hosting each time. Six different teams have won the tournament, with the West Indies and England taking first place twice.

Over the years, we have seen some standout performances that helped their teams advance in the main event, and those dependable individuals have also been honoured with the Player of the Tournament title. There have been six different Player of the Tournament winners in the seven previous editions, with India’s standout batsman Virat Kohli winning it twice. Additionally, the Player of the Tournament has only come from the champions on two occasions.
Additionally, only one bowling performance and one all-around performance were recognised among the seven winners of the Player of the Tournament title, but five players were recognised for their batting performances.

Sam Curran in 2022 (England)
With 13 wickets in total, Curran ended the World Cup second only to Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka. He ended with the best economy among the England pace bowlers, 6.52, and got his wickets at an average of 11.38, ranking him sixth among all bowlers in the competition.

David Warner in 2021 (Australia)
The aggressive opener finished the 2021 tournament as the second-highest run-scorer behind Pakistan captain Babar Azam with 289 runs, including three fifties, in seven matches. Warner had a strike rate of 146.70 and a run average of 48.16.
Virat Kohli in 2016 (India)
The top Indian batsman made T20 World Cup history by becoming the first player to ever earn Player of the Tournament honours twice. In 2016, Kohli finished as the second-highest run-scorer after Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal with 273 runs in five games.

When he scored 319 runs (the most in a single edition) in six innings at an average of 106.33 and a strike rate of 129.14 in 2014, the Indian batsman received his first player of the tournament award. He combined four half-centuries during the competition, however, India lost to Sri Lanka in the championship match and was unable to win their second T20 World Cup crown.
Shane Watson in 2012 (Australia)
At his best in 2012, the Australian all-rounder finished as the top run-scorer with 249 runs scored in six games at an average of 49.80 and a 150-strike rate. In the competition, he added three half-centuries as well. As the second-highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets at an economy rate of 6.83 and a best of 3/26, Watson also shone with the ball.
Kevin Pietersen in 2010 (England)
The English batter finished the tournament with 248 runs, the second-most in the edition, with an average of 62.00 and a strike rate of 137.77. As England overcame Australia in the World Cup final and went on to win their first World Cup in any format, Pietersen not only made two fifty-sevens during the tournament but also a crucial 47 off 31 balls.
Tillakaratne Dilshan in 2009 (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan all-rounder finished the 2009 tournament with 317 runs in 7 matches at an average of 52.83 and a strike rate of 144.74, taking the top spot in terms of run scoring. In the semi-final match against the West Indies, he again scored three half-centuries, including an unbeaten 96.
Shahid Afridi in 2007 (Pakistan)
With his aggressive style of play with both bat and ball, the Pakistan all-rounder was designed for the shorter format, but his efforts could only assist his nation to a runners-up position in the 2007 inaugural tournament, which was won by their arch-rivals India.
As the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the competition with a 6.71 economy rate and a top of 4 for 19, Afridi took up the first-ever Player of the Tournament title in T20 World Cup history. Additionally, he scored 91 runs with a strike rate of 197.82, the highest of which was 46.
