On Saturday, Lee Zii Jia and Viktor Axelsen suffered shocking losses in the 2023 Swiss Open semifinal stage and crashed out from the event. Watanabe Koki, the 37th-ranked badminton player in the world, defeated his opponent in Basel 21-11, 21-14 in just 27 minutes to qualify for his first BWF Tour Super 300 final. Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-chen defeated world No. 1 Axelsen in the second semi-final with a 21-10, 21-15 victory.

To advance towards the women’s singles final, Mia Blichfeldt barely defeated Beiwen Zhang. Despite losing the first game, Mia defeated the American 21-18 in the third-set to clinch the match. The Dane shuttler will now play sixth-seed Pornpawee Chochuwong, who emerged victorious after an equally arduous match against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

2023 Swiss Open: BWF points award system

Each category winner in the Swiss Open would receive 7,000 BWF points in total, with the runner-up receiving around 5,950 points. The current world champion Viktor Axelsen will depart the competition with only 4,900 BWF points after losing his semi-final tie against Taiwanese ace Chou Tien-chen.

Swiss Open 2023: prize money distribution

Viktor Axelsen, the current world champion, lost to Chou Tien-chen in the semi-final, ending his chances of winning the Swiss Open championship. He will now go home with rewards totaling $3,045. Each singles category winner at the 2023 BWF Super 300 Swiss Open will get a prize of $15,750 from the $210,000 total prize pool for the event. Compared to the semi-final losers’ $3,045 prize, the singles runners-up will receive $7,980.
