Zhang Yufei continued her astonishing performance at the Asian Games 2023, clinching her fifth gold medal in the women’s 50m freestyle on Thursday in Hangzhou.

In a close race, Zhang beat Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China, by just a touch and set a Games record with a time of 24.26, only 0.08 seconds faster than the silver medalist. Cheng Yujie, another Chinese swimmer, finished third on the podium with a time of 24.60.

As the swimming competition nears its conclusion, Zhang Yufei remains on an impressive trajectory, eyeing a potential seventh gold medal on Friday. She will compete in the 50-meter butterfly and the 4×100-meter medley relay in her future events, giving her a remarkable 7-for-7 performance for the whole tournament.

If Zhang succeeds, she would have won more medals than Ikee Rikako, a Japanese swimmer who won the Games MVP award in Jakarta in 2018 after winning six medals. However, Zhang chose to remain silent to reporters this particular evening, despite her great achievement.

Who is Zhang Yufei?

Zhang Yufei is a well-known Chinese swimmer. She has been in the news because she recently won her fifth medal in the women’s 50-meter freestyle at the Asian Games 2023.

She was born on 19 April 1998 in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, China. She attended Nanjing Sport Institute.

Her height is 5 feet 9 inches, or 1.76 meters. She is currently 25 years old.

Her career

Zhang Yufei began her swimming adventures when she was just three years old. She joined the Jiangsu Swimming Team at age five and broke age-group records.

She made a big impression on the world stage at the age of fourteen by outrunning the 2008 Olympic champion to win the 200-meter butterfly gold medal at the 2012 FINA World Cup. In 2014, she made her debut on the national stage by participating in the Summer Youth Olympics and winning five medals, including a gold in the relay competitions.

Zhang Yufei demonstrated his talent at the 2015 FINA World Championships by winning the bronze in the 200-meter butterfly and the relay medal barely 40 minutes later. In 2018, she won the women’s 200-meter butterfly gold medal at the 18th Asian Games.

She won silver in the women’s 100-meter butterfly at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, Zhang’s breakthrough performance came in the women’s 200-meter butterfly and 4×200-meter freestyle relay, when she set Olympic and world records and won double gold.

Moving forward to the 2023 Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships, Zhang Yufei won the women’s 100-meter butterfly gold medal.
