At the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on Saturday night, Ledecky broke the world record for the 1,500-meter freestyle. Speaking about her win, she said,
I knew that record was within reach just based on some things I’ve done in training, especially my distance stuff (as it) has felt really good this fall.
The Olympic medalist completed the race in 15:08.24, beating the previous mark (15:18.01) established by Sarah Wellbrock of Germany in 2019.

Katie Ledecky is a well-known American competitive swimmer. She has been in the news because she recently broke the world record for the 1,500-meter freestyle.
Her real name is Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky. She was born on March 17, 1997, in Washington, D.C. She was raised in the suburb of Bethesda, Maryland as a Catholic.
Her mother’s name is Mary Gen (Hagan) who is of Irish descent and her father’s name is David Ledecky. She has Czech and Jewish ancestry. Ledecky’s mother is of Irish descent. She has one elder brother named Michael who is also a swimmer. She is the niece of businessman Jon Ledecky who is well-known for being co-owner of the NHL team New York Islanders.
Katie Ledecky did her schooling at Little Flower School and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. She trained at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club in the summer of 2012 under the direction of coach Yuri Sugiyama, and then through the 2016 Olympics under the direction of coach Bruce Gemmell.
Later, she got a Stanford University sports scholarship where she finished the prerequisite courses for a bachelor of arts in psychology with a minor in political science.
Her height is 6 ft 0 inches or 183 cm and her weight is 160 lbs or 73 kg. She is currently 25 years old and is unmarried.
Her Career
After swimming for her high school and university, she made her international debut by winning the gold medal in the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Olympic Games as a 15-year-old.
Since then, she has won 19 gold medals at world championships and seven gold medals at the Olympics, which is a record for a female swimmer.
She holds the women’s 800- and 1500-meter freestyle (long course) world records. Additionally, she now owns the records for the 500, 1000, and 1650-yard freestyle races for women.
Due to her accomplishments, Katie Ledecky has been named the Female World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World a record-breaking five times. She also won the titles of Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 2017, L’Équipe International Female Champion of Champions in 2014 and 2015, USOC Female Athlete of the Year in 2013, 2016, and 2017, Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year in 2017, and ESPY Best Female Athlete in 2022.
