What led to the death of Sushmita Minz?
The woman whose lifeless body was discovered in the pond of a recently constructed sensory park in this locality on Tuesday has been identified by the authorities as Sushmita Minz, an Assistant Collector serving in Rourkela. Hailing from the Ramabahal region in the nearby Rajgangpur area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district, Minz was stationed at the Rourkela additional district magistrate’s office. It was reported that Minz had gone missing on September 15, prompting her brother to seek assistance from the Uditnagar police on September 17.
On Tuesday around 3.15 pm, a security guard at the park noticed her lifeless body floating in the pond and promptly alerted the Plantsite police. Fire Services personnel arrived at the scene and successfully retrieved her body from the pond. Nearby, her sandals and personal items, contained in a plastic bag, were discovered on the water body’s steps.

The demise of assistant collector Sushmita Minz, initially attributed by the police to drowning, took a different twist on Thursday when her mother raised suspicions of possible foul play. Sushmita, aged 35, was discovered in the pond at Sensory Park on Tuesday evening, and though her identity was confirmed by the police, the circumstances surrounding her demise remained unclear.
Celestina Minz, Sushmita’s mother, asserted that her daughter had been battling depression due to work-related stress and claimed that two senior officers had been exerting undue pressure on her. Nevertheless, Celestina’s statements lacked coherence, and she presented no compelling evidence to substantiate her accusations.
An investigator involved in the case maintained that Sushmita’s drowning appeared to have been intentional, suggesting suicide as the cause. Rourkela SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra expressed the view that the assistant collector’s death seemed linked to drowning. When queried about the possibility of suicide, he stated that further clarity would emerge with the arrival of the autopsy report.
