Suna Besha Other Names
Rajadhiraja Besha, Raja Besha, and Rajarajeshwara Besha are other names for Suna Besha. During this event, the gods Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are jewelled in gold.
It is celebrated on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi Tithi, the day following the Deities’ return from Gundicha Temple. Suna Besha is one of the 32 Beshas, or forms, of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra that are highly revered by followers.
The holy trinity will be ornamented with gold during this unique ritual. In addition, Lord Jagannath will wear a silver conch on his left hand and a gold chakra (disc) on his right hand. On the other hand, Balabhadra will be adorned with a golden mace and plough on each of his hands. Emerald jewellery adorns the forehead of the goddess Subhadra (Panna).
Each year, Suna Besha is observed five times. The other four Suna Beshas are observed inside the temple in the Ratna Singhasana, while one is observed on Bahuda Ekadashi during the Rath Yatra on the chariots parked at the lion’s gate, also known as Singhadwara.
The Suna Besha rite is thought to have started in 1460, during the reign of King Kapilendra Deb, when he brought gold to Puri on 16 elephants after defeating a rival king and dedicated them to the Jagannath Temple.
Other ceremonies like Mangala Alati, Abakasha, and Mailama-Tadapa Lagi will be performed at the chariots early today. Before the Suna Besha, other important rites including Gopalaballav, Madhayna Dhoopa, and Sandhya Alati will be conducted.
