2022 Sultan of Johor Cup is currently being held in Malaysia with best U-21 players around the world as star attraction, we take a look at the history and all-time winners list of the prestigious competition
From 22nd-29th October in Johor Bahru of Malaysia, 10th edition of prestigious Sultan of Johor Cup will take place. In this annual international men’s U-21 field hockey tournament, total of six countries will participate as per traditions since inaugural edition.

Since it’s inaugural edition in 2011, Sultan of Johor Cup has been held annually in Malaysia’s Johor Bahru as an international under–21 men’s field hockey tournament. Each edition of this tournament featured six teams, who played one match against each other in round-robin format to determine top-two teams, who qualified for final.
Hosts Malaysia won inaugural edition’s final 3-2 against Australia to become first-ever champions and register their name in books of history. In next edition, India qualified for final but lost 2-3 against Germany to finish as runner-up. During 2013 edition, India won their first-ever Sultan of Johor Cup title after defeating hosts Malaysia 3-0 in final before retaining their trophy next year with 2-1 final against Great Britain.
Great Britain have won last two editions of Sultan Johor Cup following their victory in final against India both in 2018 and 2019. The competition wasn’t held in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic but has returned with 2022 edition this week. Throughout this tournament’s history, India have qualified for final record six times, which saw them finish twice as champions and four times as runner-up.

There have been nine tournaments so far, but only five teams have clinched title of champions. Having captured the championship three times, Great Britain is by far the most successful team. With two titles each, India and Australia are second-most successful countries in this competition. In addition to these teams, Malaysia and Germany have also won one title each.
